Emotions are the powerful brain states that focus our senses, attention, and other mental faculties on immediate or critical experiences, behaviors, and functions. They are indispensable for facilitating our most important primitive survival, defensive, social, and procreation behaviors. They were designed by nature to power our most important life behaviors. Without them, we could not survive physically or procreate. However, if they are not properly understood and controlled, they can really wreak havoc with our intellectual functions, our social relationships, and our long-term survival and well-being. Our emotions work to drive important primitive reactive behaviors, mostly in the present, while our intellect provides monitoring, management, and integration functions, and works to achieve more complex, long-term, or strategic plans and goals.
